UMass Chan-Lahey Regional Medical Campus

Helping To Shape Tomorrow’s Physician Leaders

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is the home of UMass Chan-Lahey, the regional medical school campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, a collaboration of Lahey and UMass Chan Medical School.

Students on the Lahey campus will study LEAD@Lahey, an innovative learning track that stands for lead, empower, advocate, and deliver. The curriculum, which follows the core curriculum of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan, adds an emphasis on leadership, health systems science and interprofessional education, preparing students to lead and create solutions to future challenges in health care.

LEAD@Lahey embodies Lahey’s long legacy of collaborative, relationship-centered, and team-based patient care. As one of the few physician-led hospitals in the country, our Medical Center provides the ideal environment to study the art and science of medicine, where humanity and innovation intersect; an environment where students who seek to make a difference will be guided by faculty coaches to explore their purpose, their leadership style and strengths, and develop effective teams.

Over the four years they will apply these leadership skills to real-world challenges in health care, culminating in the completion of an action project. Upon graduation, each student will have the foundational skills to lead teams and organizations advocating for change in healthcare.

At UMass Chan-Lahey, students will connect to community and business leaders and Lahey/BILH healthcare executives who are addressing access, equity, and social determinants of health in the diverse communities of northeastern Massachusetts. Students will be integral members of the team, developing real world solutions that improve health for our communities, especially those historically underserved.

Regardless of a student’s medical specialty, LEAD@Lahey’s focus on interdisciplinary, person-centered model of care, combined with the educational and research expertise of UMass Chan, creates a unique culture of inquiry and innovation that nurtures future physician leaders.

For the first 18 months of training, students will participate in the VISTA core curriculum primarily on the Worcester campus, with most Wednesdays spent at Lahey and its surrounding community in northeastern Massachusetts, participating in Early Clinical Learning.

Students at UMass Chan-Lahey will be part of Walden House, an exceptionally close learning community, developing camaraderie with classmates and peer mentors, faculty and educators. Early interactions with patients and families in their communities will be a major focus in the first weeks of medical school.
