Diagnostic Radiology Residency Conferences & Research

About Radiology Residency Conferences

We hold conferences according to the following schedule:

  • Noon conferences occur on a daily basis and last until 1:30 pm.

Many of the case-based reviews are given by residents with staff supervision. Also included in the noon conference lecture series are dedicated MRI physics lectures, radiologic physics lectures and visiting professor lectures. We use audience response systems to further enhance our lectures and prepare for board examinations.

Our visiting professor lecture series includes invited local and national experts in radiology imaging who generally give an hour didactic conference preceded or followed by a case-based review geared to our residents.

Multidisciplinary conferences occur on a daily basis and generally occur in the mornings before start of daily rotations on the following schedule:

  • Monday: Thoracic Oncology
  • Tuesday: Colorectal surgery
  • Wednesday: Genitourinary, Gynecologic Oncology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Thursday: Gastrointestinal (GI)
  • Friday: ENT

Residents on specific rotations may also attend multidisciplinary conferences in breast imaging, GI oncology, neurosurgery and GU oncology.

Journal clubs occur several times per year and require active resident participation. Senior residents will critically present journal articles on a variety of topics, with discussion afterward between residents and staff.

Tumor Board conferences are weekly interdisciplinary conferences held with surgeons, radiation oncologists and oncologists. Radiology residents are responsible for presenting the radiology aspects of cases. Residents gain valuable insight into treatment and management of a variety of oncologic cases.

Our residents also present cases at other multidisciplinary conferences, including with the general internal medicine residents. This is a great opportunity to meet and discuss cases with other residents and clinicians.

Conference Day Staff Responsible
Pulmonary/Thoracic Oncology Monday Thoracic Imaging Staff
ENT Friday Neuroradiology and Nuclear Medicine Staff
Gynecology/Oncology First and third Wednesdays Abdominal Imaging Staff
Genitourinary Fourth Wednesday Abdominal Imaging Staff
Neuroradiology/Neurology Second Wednesday Neuroradiology and Nuclear Medicine Staff
Physics First, second and third Friday Dr. Flacke
Mammography Friday Breast Imaging Staff

Research Opportunities

As mandated by the ACGME, all residents are required to complete at least one research project during their radiology residency. Over the last few years, we have added more support mechanisms to further encourage residents to take an active role in research.

Residents, with the approval of supervising staff and the program director, are encouraged to apply for protected research time for ongoing research projects.

Fourth year residents will be encouraged to do research in their areas of concentration. In addition, the department will fully fund registration fees or travel expenses incurred for residents to present research for at least one conference. Additional reimbursements are predicated on submission of prior abstracts/presentations for publication.

Residents will have at their disposal a radiology research fund that can be used for financial expenses related to any departmental research.
