Volunteers play an important role supporting our mission at Lahey Clinic. With opportunities in a variety of functions throughout the hospital, we encourage volunteers with a range of interests and experiences to help us deliver compassionate care to our patients.
All volunteer assistance is valuable, whether greeting or escorting patients and visitors, delivering materials, passing out snacks, helping people with lunch or stocking supplies. Our department staff, as well as our patients and visitors, appreciate the commitment and help all our volunteers provide. Volunteer opportunities may include:
Other volunteer opportunities include:
The Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) allows former patients to provide valuable insight about care practices, hospital policies, current colleague projects, quality and safety recommendations, and identify patient and family needs or concerns.
Research suggests that interaction with healthy, well-behaved pets can improve a patient’s mood, reduce anxiety, promote relaxation and provide comfort to families. Pet therapy programs have also been shown to improve staff morale.
The Paws for Care pet therapy program at Lahey works with Pet Partners and Caring Canines to provide this service. All pet therapists have been screened and all pets have completed therapy certification.
Volunteers can also participate in our Reach to Recovery program, a partnership program with the American Cancer Society that supports breast cancer patients. Volunteers are breast cancer survivors themselves who have been trained to help patients express their feelings, talk about their fears and concerns, and seek guidance from others’ first-hand experience.
Our volunteer musicians provide pleasant, relaxing music to enhance the lobby environment for patients, families and staff. Our talented musicians take great care in creating a calm, relaxing space by playing either the piano, harp or dulcimer.
We are fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers who demonstrate compassion, care and commitment to our patients and staff. Their kind hearts and helping hands can elevate a patient’s visit or hospital stay from ordinary to one filled with caring and kindness.
