The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is a 1-year ACGME-accredited fellowship offered to one fellow per academic year. Through our program, we assist and guide compassionate transplant hepatologists committed to improving the lives of patients with hepatobiliary diseases, who advance the field of transplant hepatology, and serve the transplant community. This is a clinical program that emphasizes clinical research and teaching.
Lahey Hospital & Medical Center specializes in various types of transplantation and is home to one of the leading liver transplant programs in the country. Our team performed the first successful liver transplant in New England in 1983, and our Living Donor Liver Transplant Program is one of the largest in the country. At this time, we follow and manage over 1,000 transplant recipients each year.
As our transplant hepatology fellow, you’ll be trained in advanced hepatology, the evaluation of pre-transplant liver patients, and the management of liver transplant recipients almost immediately after surgery. The fellowship includes both inpatient and outpatient rotations with our general hepatology and transplant clinics as well as shorter rotations with Hepatobiliary Surgery, Medical Weight Loss Clinic, Transplant ID, Transplant Nephrology, Addiction Medicine, and Interventional Radiology. Our fellows also rotate up to one month with pediatric transplant hepatologists at Boston Children’s Hospital.
We tailor rotations according to our fellows’ specific interests and goals. Fellows should expect to work on clinical research and quality improvement projects with the goal of completing at least one project for peer-reviewed publication and/or presentation at a national conference. They will attend continuity clinics and endoscopy blocks throughout the year and actively participate in teaching with gastroenterology fellows, internal medicine residents, and medical students. Weeknight and weekend calls are not required.
