About Our Fellowship
The Lahey Hospital Medicine Advanced Practice (AP) Fellowship is an intensive 12-month post-graduate fellowship program designed for early-career advanced practice providers (APPs), both nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well as those new to hospital-based medicine. We provide a solid foundation in hospital-based medicine to help APPs develop the clinical decision-making skills required to care for a diverse and increasingly complex patient population. Novice, new and hospital-based medicine APPs will develop a wide range of knowledge and skills allowing them to become competent and well-rounded hospital medicine providers.
Under the direction of their preceptor, our fellows gain the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to assess acute and chronic patient illnesses; obtain complete medical histories and perform physical exams; order and interpret laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulate and implement a diagnosis and treatment plan; seek consultations or referrals as necessary; accurately prescribe and/or dispense medication; and counsel patients and their families/caregivers.
Throughout the program, hospital medicine APP fellows are exposed to diverse patient populations, including patients receiving pulmonary critical care and those cared for under specialty services. Fellows may rotate through our main campus in Burlington, our satellite facility in Peabody and our partner hospital in Beverly. Fellows are expected to rotate through day, swing and overnight rotations over the course of the 12-month program.

Physician Assistant
- Graduate of an accredited physician program
- Documentation of registration for next NCCPA Board administration or successful completion of NCCPA Board and maintenance of appropriate CME
Nurse Practitioner
- Graduate of a master's program in nursing (AGACNP board certification preferred)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required
- Certification and current license to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- DEA number and Mass Department of Public Health Division of Food and Drug Restricted Substances registration number as appropriate
- Written prescription privilege protocols signed by all attendings with whom the individual will be working
Applications for the hospital medicine fellowship are completed online through the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center website. Typically, we accept applications between May and August for an anticipated January start date.

Candidates are expected to participate in a panel interview.
The curriculum is based on the Core Competencies set forth by the Society of Hospital Medicine and seeks to shape fellows into well-rounded, competent providers who can safely care for patients experiencing a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions.

- Metabolic and electrolyte imbalances
- Cirrhosis
- Acute renal failure
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Cellulitis
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Hematologic disorders and malignancies
- Cerebrovascular disorders
- Shock
- Seizure disorders
- COPD and asthma
- Heart failure
- Community and health care-associated pneumonias
- Sepsis
- Diabetes mellitus
- Common endocrine disorders
- Alcohol and drug withdrawal
- Venous thromboembolism
Fellows spend most of their time caring for patients managed by the hospital medicine service. To establish a well-rounded and diverse clinical background, fellows are exposed to specialty services during the 12-month period.

- Cardiology
- Pulmonary/critical care
- Hematology/oncology
- Infectious disease
- Palliative care
- Gastroenterology/hepatology
- Endocrinology
- Transplant medicine
- Orthopedics
Q: When did you start offering this program?
A: We admitted our first AP fellow in April 2022.
Q: How many candidates are accepted for each cohort?
A: Currently, we accept one to two candidates for each cohort.
Q: How much experience do you require?
A: Our hospital medicine AP fellowship is open to new graduates and those looking to transition into hospital medicine from a different specialty practice.
Q: Which nurse practitioner certification is preferred?
A: We prefer the Adult-Gero Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) certification. NPs certified as family nurse practitioners or adult-gero primary care nurse practitioners are encouraged to apply.
Q: What are some of the responsibilities involved with the program?
A: In addition to clinical work, fellows participate in various academic programs, including weekly Grand Rounds, simulation experiences, academic days and weekly general internal medicine resident activities. They are also required to complete case presentations based on clinical work.
Q: Where do your fellows usually end up working?
A: Graduates of the hospital medicine AP fellowship are able to work in any acute care hospital.
