Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Residencies

The aims of the Program dovetail with the overall mission of Lahey, which strives to:

Currently, we are transitioning to a fully integrated plastic surgery residency program. Two integrated residents are matched per year with a total of 12 residents in the program. Residents receive a broad training in surgical fields during the first two years of training, including 6 months on the plastic surgery service, with requisite plastic surgery exposure from the PGY3 year onward.

Focusing on the competency based goals and objectives outlined by the ACGME, the residency is centered at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, which is a suburban tertiary care group practice model, focusing on education and excellence in patient care. Complementary rotations in university and private practice environments increase the depth and breadth of exposure to plastic surgery and provide constant challenges and unique opportunities to experience the specialty across a diverse spectrum of patients and practices.

Through this experiential learning, the program will develop empathetic, innovative leaders in the field who are technically skilled, knowledgeable and constantly striving for self-improvement. The ultimate goal is to produce a self-actualized, competent, confident, compassionate and ethical plastic surgeon, motivated to be a leader in the field.

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training program at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center provides fundamental training in all aspects of plastic surgery, including:

• Complex trunk reconstruction
• Breast reconstruction
• Aesthetic and laser surgery
• Microsurgery
• Hand surgery
• Lower extremity salvage
• Peripheral nerve surgery

The training program is built upon a foundation of anatomy training, didactic lectures and operative experience designed to teach the conceptual basis of plastic surgery in addition to specific surgical techniques. The program builds a solid foundation for future academic or private practice, and provides the skills necessary to successfully complete the certification requirements of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Lahey has a long track record of educating future plastic surgeons. Our independent training program was founded in 1988, graduating its first class of residents in 1990. Since then, it has continued to grow and educate high quality residents.

Residents’ surgical experience includes rotations at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Maine Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital. This rotating experience allows residents to learn from a multitude of attending surgeons in diverse practice environments.

Residents have the opportunity to gain both basic science and clinical research experience during their residency. This ensures they are able to pursue an academic or research-oriented career following training or, if the individual chooses, to pursue a private practice career with an inquisitive, intellectually curious attitude.
