LHCI’s hematologists treat all blood-related conditions and have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating blood cancer including:

• Leukemia – Cancer of your blood or bone marrow, affecting your body’s ability to fight infections
• Lymphoma – Cancer of your lymph nodes that starts in your white blood cells
• Multiple myeloma – Cancer that develops from cells in your bone marrow called plasma cells

At Lahey, you will receive hands-on care for leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, or other blood cancers from experienced and compassionate providers.

Our board-certified hematologists exclusively treat diseases of the blood and bone marrow and also perform blood cancer research. Our hematology team provides the most current cancer treatments and can offer you access to cancer clinical trials if you so desire.

The LHCI hematology team holds weekly conferences to review all care plans and treatments, and monthly meetings to share expertise and advice with colleagues. • Chemotherapy – Medication, often a combination of drugs, that you receive via injection or intravenous infusion, or that you swallow in liquid, tablet, or capsule form
• Radiation – The use of high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells; not usually part of blood cancer treatment but sometimes used in special circumstances
• Autologous stem cell transplant – A procedure in which high-dose chemotherapy is used to treat certain cancer

About Autologous Stem Cell Transplants at Lahey

An autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) is a procedure that “rescues” your body with an infusion of healthy blood-forming cells following high-dose chemotherapy. ASCT was formerly known as a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy material in the center of your bones that produces blood cells.

In this type of transplant:

• Your own stem cells (the cells from which all of your blood cells develop) are first removed, or harvested, from your blood.
• You are then treated with high doses of chemotherapy. The high-dose treatment kills the cancer cells as well as the blood-producing cells that are left in your bone marrow.
• Afterward, the collected stem cells are put back into your bloodstream to allow your bone marrow to produce new blood cells.
