Cancer Care

Sophia Gordon Cancer Center

A full range of comprehensive medical and surgical specialists are available at the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. Board-certified physicians in medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology collaborate to bring personalized, compassionate care to patients.

Lahey uses a multidisciplinary, team approach as its foundation for delivering cancer services. Clinicians treating the same patient readily consult one another, review test results and work in partnership on treatment plans. Regular tumor conferences are held to exchange information on complex and common diagnoses, and then, together, doctors plan the best therapies for patients. Cancer therapies are designed using the most advanced treatments, research, clinical trials and support resources. Treating the whole patient by understanding the emotional and physical effects of cancer is central to Lahey’s model of care.

In addition, to support the all-inclusive needs of our cancer patients, Lahey offers integrative therapy services, also known as alternative therapy services, for cancer patients. Among these services are acupuncture, art therapy, massage therapy, Reiki and the YMCA Pink Program, a special exercise program for breast cancer patients based on their activity levels.

Site-Specific Focus

This unique approach is further distinguished by a cancer site-specific focus. Lahey has cancer teams, each headed by a director-leader and comprised of at least one hematologist, oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, as well as various allied health care providers. Each team focuses on one of the following cancer sites: breast, lung, hepatobiliary, colon and rectal, bladder, kidney, prostate, gynecology, head and neck, hematologic, and skin and brain. This approach to care ensures patients’ needs are addressed immediately, efficiently and in a clinically appropriate manner.

In 2008, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons awarded the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center its Outstanding Achievement Award for excellence in providing cancer patient care. This distinction is recognized by only 19 percent of cancer programs surveyed by the group.

Lahey cancer services are now available in Burlington, Peabody and Derry and Salem, NH (Parkland Medical Center).

Leading in Cancer Research
Uncovering the Clues

Cancer research helps uncover clues about how cancer grows and the best way to treat it. At Lahey Health, our researchers conduct dozens of clinical trials each year, including many cancer clinical trials evaluating new approaches to cancer treatment.

A deeper understanding of how cancer forms and grows has led to more targeted treatment options that have a greater chance of successfully treating a cancer, often with less side effects than seen with conventional chemotherapy.

Cancer Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies designed to determine whether new treatments are both safe and effective for humans. At Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, our researchers conduct hundreds of clinical trials each year, including many cancer clinical trials.

Most of the cancer clinical trials at Lahey help our doctors discover more effective ways to treat many different types of cancer. Additional clinical trials are designed to improve our ability to diagnose cancer as well as discover better ways to manage symptoms associated with cancer treatment. Patients who participate in our clinical trials often gain access to new cancer treatments before they are available to the general public.

Clinical trials are conducted for all stages of cancer, including early limited stage cancers to advanced cancers. At Lahey, patients will be provided the option to participate in our cancer clinical trials if they meet the eligibility criteria. Participation is entirely voluntary. Patients will never be enrolled in a clinical trial without their consent.

Patient Safety is Paramount

When patients participate in a cancer clinical trial at Lahey, they can be assured that patient safety is our primary concern. Our clinical staff has extensive experience in conducting clinical trials, and we are deeply committed to protecting the rights and welfare of our patients.

All research activity at Lahey is monitored by the hospital’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure the safety of study participants. The IRB is composed of Lahey colleagues and members of the general public from our local communities.
