Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Training in Pulmonary and Critical Care

Pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowships at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center include training in interventional pulmonology and prepare participants for certification in both pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. Rotations are scheduled in the medical and surgical intensive care units.

Our program offers a high faculty-to-trainee ratio. You’ll work directly with our pulmonary and critical care medicine professionals. But you’ll also interact with physicians and trainees in anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, internal medicine and its subspecialties, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and urology.

We have six fellows in our program at any one time. Two positions are available each year.

What You Can Expect

During your three-year fellowship, you’ll maintain an active clinical practice. You’ll also participate in clinics focused on asthma, tuberculosis and sleep medicine.

Research

Research opportunities are an essential component of your training. As part of your fellowship, you’ll have the option to develop a research proposal and present it to Lahey’s Institutional Review Board. With guidance from a supervising faculty member, you’ll carry out the project and present it at a national meeting. You may also have the opportunity to contribute to an invited book chapter or submit interesting case reports for publication in a peer reviewed journal.

You may complete your project at any time during your training. However, six months are set aside specifically for research.

During this time, you can work on your project without any daytime clinical responsibilities other than your weekly Outpatient Continuity Clinic. You will also have the option of using one or two of your elective blocks to do research.
