The LHCI hematology team holds weekly conferences to review all care plans and treatments, and monthly meetings to share expertise and advice with colleagues. Lahey also offers ongoing support groups for people with blood disorders that are open to anyone, regardless of where they are receiving their care.
Lahey’s autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), an internationally recognized accrediting body for medical institutions that perform stem cell transplants.
This accreditation indicates that Lahey’s ASCT program has met the most rigorous standards for every aspect of stem cell therapy. The inspection process evaluates the clinical care in the hospital and outpatient clinic as well as the collection, processing, storage, and infusion of blood cells, and is a sign of a quality program.
Lahey’s outcomes and patient satisfaction scores are excellent, exceeding nationally established benchmarks.
At Lahey, you will receive attentive, proficient, hands-on care for leukemia, lymphoma, or other types of blood cancer from senior physicians with years of experience.
Our treatment options for blood cancer include:
- Chemotherapy – Medication, often a combination of drugs, that you receive via injection or intravenous infusion, or that you swallow in liquid, tablet, or capsule form
- Radiation – The use of high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells; not usually part of blood cancer treatment but sometimes used in special circumstances
- Autologous stem cell transplant – A procedure in which high-dose chemotherapy is used to treat certain cancer
About Autologous Stem Cell Transplants at Lahey
An autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) is a procedure that “rescues” your body with an infusion of healthy blood-forming cells following high-dose chemotherapy. ASCT was formerly known as a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy material in the center of your bones that produces blood cells.
In this type of transplant:
- Your own stem cells (the cells from which all of your blood cells develop) are first removed, or harvested, from your blood.
- You are then treated with high doses of chemotherapy. The high-dose treatment kills the cancer cells as well as the blood-producing cells that are left in your bone marrow.
- Afterward, the collected stem cells are put back into your bloodstream to allow your bone marrow to produce new blood cells.
Lahey has offered autologous stem cell transplantation since 1996. Our skill and expertise is matched by the caring and compassion with which we deliver our care. Our goal is to provide you and your family with mental, physical, and emotional support during a very stressful time.
