Obesity is a complex disease caused by many biologic, environmental, behavioral and social factors. It is not simply related to how one eats or exercises. At Lahey Clinic, we understand how obesity impacts your physical and mental health.
We know that losing weight can be difficult. At baseline, individuals with obesity tend to have hormonal changes that increase hunger and decrease fullness. And when one tries to lose weight the body sometimes fights back — metabolism slows down, hunger hormones increase and fullness hormones decrease.
Metabolic and weight loss surgery procedures reduce the size of your stomach. After surgery, you feel full, eat less and lose weight.
These can have important impacts on the body, improving heart health, diabetes, respiratory conditions, liver disease and many other conditions. The process also significantly improves quality of life.
Your metabolic and weight loss surgery team, including surgeons, advanced practice providers, dietitians, psychologists and nurses, work closely with you to develop a lifestyle plan that works for you. We combine education on nutrition, exercise and mindfulness with life-long support to help achieve your wellness goals.
Not everyone needs or wants surgery. For some people, medical weight loss may be a good place to start or part of your care before or after surgery.
Medical weight loss services are provided at Beverly Hospital Lifestyle Health in Burlington, where you'll have access to nutrition counseling, weight loss medication, and behavioral health support.
Non-surgical weight loss services are also provided at the BILH Care Center in Danvers.
