Burlington, MA – UMass Chan Medical School and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, part of Beth Israel Lahey Health, celebrated the completion of construction of the new UMass Chan-Lahey regional medical school campus as it prepares to welcome its first cohort of students this summer.

The new regional medical school campus located on the main campus of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center at 41 Mall Road in Burlington signifies a shared commitment by the hospital and UMass Chan to advancing medical education in Massachusetts through state-of-the-art learning environments.

UMass Chan-Lahey will officially open its doors in August to approximately 25 medical school students accepted into the new LEAD@Lahey program. The medical students will follow the core curriculum of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan in Worcester with an added emphasis on leadership, health systems science and interprofessional education.

“The UMass Chan-Lahey regional campus represents a terrific opportunity to build on our strong clinical foundation as an academic medical center with a focus on serving our community,” said Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, president of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and professor at UMass Chan-Lahey. “We are delighted to begin training the next generation of providers who will exemplify the tenets of values-based leadership that we so strongly uphold here at Lahey.”

LEAD@Lahey will focus on preparing students to lead and create solutions to future challenges in health care grounded in evidence-based, patient-centered, multispecialty and interprofessional practice. The campus will also include a new research collaboration between UMass Chan and Lahey with the creation of the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science, a quantitative science research hub.

“As our second regional campus, UMass Chan-Lahey offers medical students the opportunity to be the physician leaders of the future, in a rapidly changing environment,” said Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor, executive deputy chancellor, provost of UMass Chan and dean of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine. “The additional layer of our innovative research partnership with our colleagues among the UMass Chan-Lahey faculty enables clinical and population scientists, faculty and medical students to leverage the expertise and clinical data of both institutions to meaningfully address the health care needs of people across the commonwealth and beyond.”

The UMass Chan-Lahey regional campus was established in December 2022, approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in May 2023 and the New England Commission of Higher Education in January 2024.

The new campus houses a learning community space with state-of-the-art technology to support interactive learning simulation. It features study pods, collaborative learning areas and a cutting-edge simulation center with standardized patient program space.

“We are eager to begin developing leaders in the medical profession who are committed to advancing health care in the community and who will lead health systems and policy for the future,” said Anne Mosenthal, MD, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center’s chief academic officer and regional executive dean of UMass Chan-Lahey. “Our partnership as UMass Chan-Lahey stands as a unique approach to medical education here in Massachusetts, an approach that will prepare our future physicians and providers to be at the forefront of innovation and advancement in their fields. We are excited to get started.”
