Lahey Receives Historic Gift from Dr. Emanuel and Sheila Landsman
Historic $15M Gift Advances Lahey’s Patient Care
Burlington, MA – Lahey Hospital & Medical Center today announced a historic $15 million gift from longtime supporters Dr. Emanuel and Sheila Landsman. One of the largest philanthropic commitments in Lahey's history, the gift will support the rejuvenation of the Dr. Emanuel and Sheila Landsman Hybrid Operating Room that will advance Clinic Transformation at Lahey. This is a significant step toward realizing the hospital's future vision for the delivery of state-of-the-art patient care.
Dr. Emanuel and Sheila Landsman are among Lahey’s most generous and longstanding supporters, with a legacy of giving to key priorities including cardiovascular care, emergency services, cancer treatment, and efforts to make the hospital more energy efficient. The Landsmans’ forward-thinking philanthropy helped Lahey become a leader in healthcare innovation and a model for other institutions. They funded the establishment of the innovative Landsman Hybrid Operating Room in 2010. Now with their support of its rejuvenation, the Landsmans are again advancing Lahey’s surgical fortitude through enhanced innovation and Artificial Intelligence enablement.
“A result of the Landsmans’ extraordinary generosity, we are building something truly exceptional,” said Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, MBA, President of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. “Their most-recent gift will allow us to deliver more advanced, AI enabled and efficient surgical care. We are truly paving the way for the next 100 years of clinical innovation at Lahey. We are grateful.”
The ability to give back is profoundly meaningful to the Landsmans. “As a young man, I received scholarships that enabled me to complete my education,” said Dr. Emanuel Landsman. “Now, Sheila and I feel privileged to give back. The clinic model at Lahey has always impressed us, and we are proud to support this approach that’s changing perspectives and improving patient outcomes.”
“A gift of this magnitude is truly transformational for a hospital,” said Julia Parrillo, Divisional Vice President, Philanthropy, Lahey. “It continues to be an honor to work with the Landsmans. Their commitment to Lahey — and to ensuring compassionate, state-of-the-art patient care is available in our community — is unparalleled. Thanks to their visionary support, we have an opportunity to expand our capacity and strengthen our capabilities so we can meet the needs of our patients today, tomorrow, and for decades to come.”
Dr. Landsman is a philanthropist and entrepreneur in the electric power industry. He co-founded American Power Conversion Corporation (APC), a leader in uninterruptible power supplies. He and Sheila met at MIT while he was a graduate student and she was working in the Instrumentation Lab. They have one daughter and three grandchildren.
Lahey Hospital & Medical Center looks forward to celebrating this gift and honoring the Landsmans’ remarkable generosity in the months ahead.
