Reconstructive Surgery Center
About Reconstructive Urology at LHMC
The Center for Reconstructive Urologic Surgery was founded in 1973 by the late Dr. Leonard Zinman, who helped pioneer many of the reconstructive techniques currently used in urological surgery.
The Center for Reconstructive Urologic Surgery is a regional, national, and international referral center dedicated to disorders of the genitourinary system. One of the busiest reconstructive centers in the world, we offer state-of-the-art urologic care complemented by original, groundbreaking research designed to advance medical techniques and improve patient outcomes. The center specializes in both minimally-invasive and complex tissue transfer techniques to provide optimal outcomes for patients with complex urethral and genitourinary pathology.
Our reconstructive fellowship-trained surgeons perform the largest volume of reconstructive procedures in New England (over 500 complex cases per year), including approximately 200 urethral reconstructions per year.
The Center also offers New England’s only Genitourinary Reconstructive Urologic Surgery Fellowship. The fellowship is a one year clinical position, designed to provide expertise in adult reconstructive urology including: urethral reconstruction, hypospadias, rectourethral fistula repair, buried penis repair, Peyronie’s disease, genital lymphedema, surgery for penile and urethral cancer, as well as GU prosthetic cases (AUS, male sling, IPP).
Our team is composed of recognized experts in reconstructive urology within the American Urological Association. We frequently lecture at national and international conferences and have published numerous journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters on urologic reconstruction. Additionally, Dr. Vanni is a member of the Trauma and Urologic Research Network of Surgeons (TURNS). Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is one of 13 centers that collaborate in the study of patients treated for a variety of conditions in trauma and reconstructive urology, including urethral strictures, male incontinence, and other urological conditions.
