Research & Medical Education
Medical Education

Lahey is a leading center for educating new physicians. Our doctors are dedicated teachers of medical students and physicians in training, many of whom have been honored by Tufts School of Medicine for excellence in teaching awards.

Additionally, many primary care physicians are on the faculty at Tufts, while others hold teaching appointments at Harvard Medical School. This emphasis on learning and up-to-date knowledge ultimately translates into enhanced patient care.

Medical Students

Lahey is one of the main teaching hospitals for UMass-Chan Medical School. At any time, there are medical students from various years rotating through different departments in the hospital. Additionally, Lahey is one of the teaching hospitals of Tufts University School of Medicine. Lahey offers supervised practical experience for both groups of medical students. As part of their experience, students may be rotating through the Department of Internal Medicine and various subspecialties, such as cardiology, pulmonary, endocrinology and palliative care. Medical students are partnered with staff physicians and more senior physicians in training.

During an appointment, you may be introduced to a medical student who, with your permission, will take your medical history and conduct a brief physical exam. You would, of course, also be seen by the supervising physician working with that medical student.

Internal Medicine Residents

Medical residents are physicians who have graduated from medical school and are now training in a clinical specialty. Our internal medicine residents take care of patients as part of our team in the general internal medicine practice. As members of this team, resident physicians care for patients under the supervision of staff physicians.

Residents also work with primary care attendings and hospitalists in the hospital during their ward rotations.

Lahey’s Internal Medicine Residency program attracts outstanding young physicians who help ensure patients receive the best care possible.

Cammarata Center

Lahey Primary Care in Burlington

Opened in 2018, the Nancy M. Cammarata Center for General Internal Medicine offers primary care services at 67 South Bedford Street in Burlington.

These offices were designed with your convenience in mind. They feature a radiology suite for x-rays, a phlebotomy station for blood draws, and a pharmacy to help us provide seamless care. More than 56 physicians and advanced practitioners see roughly 125,000 patients a year in this state-of-the-art center.

If you need to schedule a routine periodic examination, a follow-up visit, same-day appointments for illness or injury, specialty referral requests or prescription renewals, call 781-744-7000 and ask to speak to your primary care physician’s office or the prescription renewal coordinator. A medical secretary will arrange a time for you. To promote continuity of care, these appointments are made whenever possible with your PCP or another member of your health care team.

Appointments for physical exams and return visits are available 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

New Primary Care Facility Honors Donor’s Mother

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center dedicated the Center for General Internal Medicine in honor of Nancy M. Cammarata. The name honors the late mother of donor Ben Cammarata of Boca Raton, Florida, who supported the construction of the facility with one of the largest gifts ever made to the institution.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation,” David Longworth, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, said when the facility opened. “This gift has allowed us to build a state-of-the-art facility, which will enhance the patient experience and allow us to expand access to care to the community.”

Nancy Michelle Cammarata was born in 1914 in New York City to Italian immigrant parents and worked for 50 years as a seamstress in New York’s Garment District.

“I never would have enjoyed business success without her support and encouragement,” said Ben Cammarata, who served on the Lahey Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2009. “I’m extremely pleased and so proud to be associated with Lahey and fortunate to contribute in some way.”

Ben Cammarata is the founder and former chairman of The TJX Companies, the leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and around the world. An avid baseball fan, he was a part owner of the Boston Red Sox from 2002 until 2007.
