What Is an X-Ray?
An X-ray is a quick imaging test that creates pictures of structures inside your body. It is most often used to look at:
- Broken bones or fractures.
- Joint problems such as arthritis.
- Chest conditions including pneumonia.
- Abdominal pain or blockages.
- Dental or facial injuries.
Because the test is fast and painless, it is often the first step in diagnosing many conditions. In many cases, results are available the same day.

What to Expect During Your X-ray
X-ray imaging is the most common type of imaging test. Most X-ray exams take only a few minutes.
You may be asked to:
- Remove jewelry or metal objects.
- Change into a gown.
- Stand, sit or lie in a specific position.
The technologist will position the imaging equipment and step behind a shield when the image is taken. You will need to stay still for a few seconds. The test does not hurt.
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your care team before your exam.

Digital X-ray technology uses lower doses of radiation than older systems while still producing clear images. Equipment is carefully maintained and tested to meet safety standards.
Radiologists work closely with your referring provider to interpret results quickly. Imaging helps your care team confirm a diagnosis and plan treatment with confidence.
Your Scan Results & Records
You will be told when and how to expect your imaging results. Many results will appear in your Patient Portal when available.
