Advanced Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are common benign (noncancerous) tumors of the uterus. For many women, a fibroid doesn’t cause any symptoms and may not need medical treatment. However, for some women, fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, physical discomfort and even pain.

Uterine Fibroid Symptoms

Uterine Fibroid Treatment
At Lahey, we offer a variety of treatment options for uterine fibroids.
Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)
A newer, noninvasive treatment option is uterine artery embolization (UAE). UAE stops vaginal bleeding by blocking the blood supply to the uterus. The fibroids shrink after their blood supply is cut off.

Myomectomy
Myomectomy is a type of fibroid removal surgery. It involves removing fibroids from the wall of the uterus (womb) without the need for a hysterectomy.
How fibroids are removed depends on where they are located in the uterus, how many and how large they are. Small fibroids in the lining of the uterus can be removed with hysteroscopy (using instruments that are placed into the uterus through the cervix), laparoscopically/with the Da Vinci robot (instruments are placed through small incisions made in the abdomen), or if very large, using a larger incision in the abdomen (laparotomy).

Transcervical Fibroid Ablation (TFA)
TFA is an outpatient incisionless procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to heat and break down fibroid tissue. Most patients are back at work the next day.
