Understanding the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy levels, body temperature and other essential functions. The parathyroid glands are four small glands located behind the thyroid. They help control calcium levels in the blood and bones, which are important for muscle, nerve and bone health.
Thyroid and Parathyroid Conditions We Treat
Our endocrinologists diagnose and treat a full range of thyroid and parathyroid disorders. These conditions can affect hormone levels and may cause symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, heart palpitations or vision problems.
Common Thyroid Disorders
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): A condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much hormone, causing the body’s metabolism to speed up.
- Thyroid nodules: Lumps or growths that develop in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules are noncancerous.
- Graves’ disease: An autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid gland to become overactive.
- Multinodular goiter: An enlarged thyroid gland with multiple nodules or growths.
- Hyperparathyroidism: A condition in which the parathyroid glands produce too much hormone, leading to high calcium levels in the blood.
Specialized Thyroid Nodule Care
Our Thyroid Nodule Clinic offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for thyroid nodules. We provide advanced diagnostic testing along with both medical and surgical treatment options when needed.

- Thyroid biopsy: A procedure that removes a small sample of thyroid tissue to test for cancer or other conditions.
- Fine needle aspiration (FNA): A minimally invasive biopsy procedure that uses a thin needle to collect thyroid cells for testing.
