Cancer Tumor Boards
What’s a Tumor Board?

When people sit together, sharing thoughts and ideas, they can solve challenges more efficiently. That’s the concept behind tumor boards.

The National Cancer Institute defines a tumor board as a treatment planning approach in which doctors who are experts in different specialties (disciplines) review and discuss the medical condition and treatment options. In cancer treatment, a tumor board review may include:

  • Medical oncologist (provides cancer treatment with drugs)
  • Surgical oncologist (provides cancer treatment with surgery)
  • Radiation oncologist (provides cancer treatment with radiation)
Lahey’s Cancer Tumor Boards

Our tumor boards meet weekly or monthly to review new cancer cases as well as complex established cases. At Lahey, when you are newly diagnosed, our personalized care starts with an evaluation and treatment plan by the tumor board specializing in your particular type of cancer.

The tumor board considers your treatment options, taking into account:

  • Genetic makeup of your tumor
  • Lab work, pathology reports and other relevant medical information
  • Personal goals
  • Radiology results
  • Support services you may need
  • Your other medical conditions
  • Other factors, as appropriate

If you need urgent care, we may schedule your treatment for as early as the next day.

We also present monthly, quarterly and biannual conferences so our providers stay up to date on the latest cancer findings, trends and treatments.

Benefits of Our Cancer-Specific Tumor Boards

Many other hospitals have generic tumor boards that discuss many different types of cancer. But at Lahey, we believe the best treatment plans come from clinicians experienced in specific cancers. These experts know how best to approach treatment for your type of cancer.

Our experts discuss and plan for your course of treatment and decide what other specialists should be involved. The goal is coordinated care and a fast path to the right treatment. This approach gives you the best chance at a high quality of life afterward.
