Cancer research helps uncover clues about how cancer grows and the best way to treat it. At Lahey, our researchers conduct various clinical trials each year, including many trials to evaluate new approaches to cancer care.
Joining a clinical trial to evaluate a new treatment may offer you a chance to improve or extend your life. It could provide access to a new treatment that may or may not be better than those already available. Results from previous clinical trials have led to key discoveries that make our lives better, including new drugs to treat cancer.
What are Cancer Clinical Trials?
Cancer clinical trials help doctors discover better ways to treat people with many different types of cancer. They also help diagnose cancer and manage symptoms from cancer treatments. People who join clinical trials often have access to new cancer treatments before they are available to the general public.
Researchers conduct clinical trials for all stages of cancer, not just advanced cancer. Participating in a clinical trial is completely your decision. At Lahey, you’ll never be enrolled in a clinical trial without your consent.
Cooperative Group Cancer Trials
Lahey is a member of the Cancer Trials Support Unit (CTSU) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). CTSU is a national network of physicians who participate in NCI-sponsored cancer treatment trials, cancer prevention trials, control trials and other cancer related studies.
The NCI sponsors several physician and medical professional cooperative groups. A cooperative group is a large network of members who are researchers, physicians and health care professionals at public and private institutions across the country.
The Cancer Cooperative groups work toward a common goal of promoting and participating in research trials committed to:
- Preventing, detecting and treating cancer.
- Improving quality of life initiatives and survival odds.
- Improving the practice of oncology medicine.

A certain clinical trial that isn’t being conducted at Lahey may be the best option for you. Through our established relationships with other hospitals, we can refer you to another institution to enroll in a clinical study there. Our goal, always, is to ensure that each one of our patients has access to the best treatment options for their specific cancer.
