Summer Research Program for High School Students

At Lahey Clinic, we are proud to support the next generation of medical researchers. Our Certificate Program in Medical Research helps students build a deeper understanding of research methods, objectivities, ethics and regulations while gaining real-world experience in an academic medical setting.

Lahey’s Medical Research Certificate Program is open to rising high school juniors and seniors. Students in gap years between high school and undergraduate school and those between undergraduate school and medical school are also invited to apply.

Curriculum

Our course curriculum covers a variety of topics, including:

  • History of research
  • Research methods
  • FDA new drug and device regulatory approval processes
  • Human subjects protections
  • Animal welfare
  • Ethical conduct
  • Simulation
  • Funding research
  • Research career development pathways 

Application Requirements

When submitting your application, please provide the following materials:

  • Personal statement
  • Resume and transcript
  • Completed application form

Participants are expected to commit to approximately 20-30 hours each week.

Program Requirements

Participants in the certificate program will be required to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Completion of online courses
  • Attendance at least five (5) lectures
  • Attendance at least five (5) weekly Journal Club meetings
  • Completion of practicum
  • Final presentation describing independent research project
