Gastroenterology Fellowship
About Lahey's Gastroenterology Fellowship
The Gastroenterology Fellowship at Lahey Clinic provides trainees with a broad-based, comprehensive experience in digestive diseases. Faculty members offer specialized expertise in:
- General gastroenterology and hepatology
- Transplant hepatology
- Therapeutic endoscopy
- Motility
- Nutrition
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Fellows gain proficiency in all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology. Approximately eighteen months are spent on the gastroenterology service, which includes both inpatient care for patients admitted with primary GI disorders and a consultation service. Lahey is also a busy liver transplant center, and trainees spend a total of six months on the inpatient liver service caring for patients with complex liver disease.
Hands-On Learning & Teaching Opportunities
Fellows maintain their own continuity clinic, which meets weekly over the course of the three-year program. During their third year, fellows rotate into both IBD and hepatology outpatient clinics. Additional rotations in endoscopy, clinical research, motility and nutrition round out the training experience.
A robust conference schedule complements hands-on learning, with didactic lectures, case discussions, and instruction in pathology and radiology. Fellows also participate in teaching, with 1-2 medical students and/or residents regularly rotating on the GI consult service. There are additional teaching opportunities on the liver service, which functions as a house staff service.
Lahey is the home of UMass Chan–Lahey, the regional medical school campus created in collaboration with UMass Chan Medical School. Lahey Gastroenterology also offers a 4th year elective for Tufts University School of Medicine students.
Graduating fellows are well-prepared for careers in academic clinical gastroenterology.
