Ophthalmology Care, Research and Education
Lahey Clinic’s Division of Ophthalmology provides complete medical and surgical ophthalmology services for patients of all ages. Our team includes ophthalmologists, optometrists and other eye care specialists and medical professionals. Many of our eye doctors also serve as faculty in our fellowship education programs.

Care & Services
At Lahey’s Division of Ophthalmology, we offer complete eye care. Our services include routine vision care as well as advanced treatments for a wide range of conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, retinal disorders, trauma and low vision.
Our vision care services are offered at several locations, and we perform advanced surgeries such as LASIK and laser surgery at our Eye Institute in Peabody.

Research
At Lahey, the Eye Institute and clinical research department collaborate through the Center for the Advancement of Research in Eyes (CARE). CARE brings together clinicians and scientists to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of eye diseases.
Our areas of research include these and others:
- Diabetic eye disease (including diabetic edema)
- Glaucoma
- Intraocular lens technology
- Macular degeneration
- Uveitis
Through these collaborative efforts, Lahey researchers and physicians work to improve patient outcomes. Research is the path to discovering new protocols for enhanced care and improved quality of life for patients.

Our History
Lahey’s ophthalmology program was founded by Dr. Edward Connolly (1969) and Dr. Joseph Bowlds (1972) at the original Lahey Clinic on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. It grew steadily over the next 14 years as more ophthalmologists and optometrists joined the team.
By 1994, when it relocated to Burlington, the program included six full-time ophthalmologists, one part-time ophthalmologist, and five full-time optometrists. That same year, the Lahey Eye Institute was created at Lahey Medical Center, Peabody. Designed as part of a re-engineering of the program led by Dr. F. Denton Wertz III, then chair of the division, the Eye Institute became a center for comprehensive vision care. Its location next to the operating suite continues to support advanced diagnostic testing and surgical treatment.
Today, the department’s multidisciplinary model combines the expertise of ophthalmologists and optometrists across subspecialties, allowing patients to benefit from truly collaborative care. Services are offered in Burlington, Peabody and Arlington. The department also provides ophthalmology services to patients in Bermuda.
