Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI and MRI guided interventions)

Patient undergoing brain MRI exam at Lahey.MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, represents one of the greatest advances of modern medicine. MRI is a diagnostic imaging tool that produces detailed images of the human body without ionizing radiation or X-rays. These images are created using a large magnet, radio waves and computers. MRI exams are painless. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved MRI for human use in 1984.

MRI is a powerful yet totally noninvasive imaging procedure. Diagnostic radiologists use MRI to visualize the earliest presentations of a large variety of important diseases and conditions, including many common forms of cancer. Besides providing the opportunity for early diagnosis, MRI allows us to carefully evaluate the stage or degree of advancement of a condition and plan the appropriate therapy for each individual. This benefits the patient, reducing the need for hospitalization and requiring fewer trips to the operating room.

MRI is ideal for evaluating orthopaedic and joint conditions, as well as the majority of sports-related injuries and disc herniations in the neck and back. Physicians at Lahey have consistently been at the forefront in implementing the newest applications of MRI, including examinations of the breast, prostate, pelvis, blood vessels, liver, pancreas, kidneys and bile ducts. Lahey radiologists and technicians are highly trained and dedicated to providing the best patient care possible.
